The mineral, Natramblygonite has the same structure and chemistry as Amblygonite but has more Sodium than Lithium content. When powdered and placed in a gas flame, Amblygonite gives the flame a bright red colour, which indicates the presence of Lithium.
The colour of Amblygonite is generally white or creamy, but it may be colourless, pale yellow, green, blue, beige, grey or pink. The crystal system is triclinic, lustre is vitreous to greasy, fracture is uneven to conchoidal and specimens are translucent. Crystal habits commonly include anhedral masses and compact grains, however short prismatic, tabular or lath-shaped (equant) crystals occur sometimes. When twinning takes place elongated, flatten crystals are formed.
Its name is derived from the Greek word amblygonios meaning blunt angle. This refers to the fact that its cleavage angle slightly differs from 90°, thus distinguishing it from Scapolite, for which it was originally mistaken. Amblygonite has four different directions of cleavage at different angles from one another and with different qualities of cleavage.

Amethyst is a macroscopic member of the enormous Quartz (SiO2) family. It is recognised by its purple colour, which ranges from the palest, most delicate lilac to the deep almost black purples. It is found all over the world and the country of growth influences the colour differences. For example, in Uruguay Amethyst tends to be medium to dark in colour and to retain its colour throughout the piece, unlike those from Brazil. Amethyst from the Ural Mountains, Russia tend to be very clear and dark and are excellent to cut for top quality gemstones, natural uncut clusters are rarely available. Vera Cruz, Mexico is the site of one of the palest varieties. The crystals are clear and prismatic with many phantoms (having a clear quartz interior and an amethyst exterior) and some forming as sceptres.
Amethyst crystals are transparent, fine-sized to large and can occur as long prismatic crystals that have a six-sided pyramid at either end or they can form as druses, which are crystalline crusts of pointed terminations, usually found in cavities. The lustre is vitreous, hardness is 7 and the crystal system is trigonal. The colour and the shape of the crystals define the grade and therefore the price of a mineral specimen.
The name Amethyst comes from Greek and means not drunken. This is a reference to the ancient belief that if you were to drink alcohol from a goblet made of Amethyst you would not become drunk, and so avoid the side effect of a hangover!

Apophyllite reduces the symptoms of allergies and respiratory problems, (particularly asthma) as well as stimulating the nerves.
Apophyllite (Hydrated Potassium Calcium Silicate Fluoride) is a member of the Silicate class of minerals with the subclass Phyllosilicates. Usually Apophyllite specimens are found in ancient lava and basalt flows. The crystals grow in the now solid cavities (amymydules or vesicles) that were formed by air bubbles when the rock was molten.
Apophyllite has crystals that tend to peel or flake apart when they are heated, hence its name, which translated from Greek means to leaf apart. The flaking occurs because of the loss of water molecules. The crystals have a vitreous to pearly lustre and are often four sided prisms truncated with either a steep four-sided pyramid or a pinacoid termination or both.
Their structure is layered with alternating silicate sheets and the potassium, sodium, calcium, fluorine and water layers. However, unlike other Phyllosilicates, the Apophyllite Group silicate sheets are composed of interconnected four and eight-member rings, which have a four-fold symmetry. Only Apophyllite group members have this unique interconnected four and eight-member ring structure.

It is unstable at normal temperatures and pressures, stable at higher pressures, but not at higher temperatures. If heated to 400 degrees C, it will spontaneously convert to Calcite if the pressure is not also increased. Vaterite, an extremely rare mineral, is a polymorph of Aragonite and Calcite also.
Perhaps Aragonite's best-known crystal habit is the twinned pseudo-hexagonal prismatic crystals that it produces (Sputniks), which is due to an error during the growth of the crystal. Another of Aragonites crystal habits is flos ferris, a delicate formation resembling coral, or twigs on a tree. In addition, it may be compact, granular, radially fibrous and massive. Aragonite is a constituent of many sea creatures' shell structures and occurs in Septarians (a fossilised sedimentary structure). Aragonite may be white, or colourless with shades of red, yellow, orange, brown, green and rarely blue. Crystals are transparent to translucent, the lustre is vitreous to dull and the crystal system is orthorhombic.

It is a common rock-forming mineral that is found in igneous, metamorphic rocks and is often associated with other minerals.
Biotite is commonly a black to brown colour, which makes it difficult to distinguish from dark brown Phlogopite. Both are end members in a series that is dependent on the percentage of iron present. Phlogopite is iron poor and Biotite is iron rich, thus producing a darker colour. Like all Micas, Biotite has a layered structure of Aluminium Silicate sheets weakly bonded together by layers of potassium ions, which produce the perfect cleavage of Muscovite. The cleavage sheets of Muscovite are durable and have high heat and electrical insulating properties. They are used to make many electrical components.
Biotite’s crystal habits include tabular to prismatic crystals with prominent pinacoid terminations and as lamellar or granular rock forming masses. The four prism faces and two pinacoid faces form pseudo-hexagonal crystal formations known as books. Crystals are transparent to translucent, lustre is vitreous to pearly, hardness is a soft 2.5 and the crystal system is monoclinic.

Calcite is named from the Greek chalix meaning Lime and has the chemistry: CaCO3 Calcium Carbonate. It belongs to the mineral class Carbonates, Calcite group. Calcite is one of the most common minerals on earth and is approximately 4% by weight of the Earth's crust. It forms in a variety of geological environments and in all three of the major rock classification types: Sedimentary as oolitic, fossiliferous and massive limestones, Metamorphic changing from Limestone to Marble through heat and pressure and Igneous as Carbonatite. In some cases, Calcite may be as much as 99% of the component minerals! What is extraordinary about Calcite is its amazing diversity of habit, and colour that may be white, colourless, yellow, orange, blue, pink, red, brown, green, black or grey.
Calcite is one of three Calcium Carbonate minerals, the other two being polymorphs (having the same chemistry but different crystal structures and symmetries) with Calcite. The common mineral Aragonite is orthorhombic, the very rare Vaterite is hexagonal and Calcite is trigonal. Calcite has numerous associated minerals that include Fluorite, Quartz, Barite, Sphalerite, Galena, Celestite, Sulphur, Gold, Copper, Emerald, Apatite, Biotite, Zeolites.
There are more than 300 crystal forms identified in Calcite and these forms can combine to produce thousands of different crystal variations, which are always trigonal or pseudo-hexagonal. The most common Calcite crystals are the scalenohedron, rhombohedron, hexagonal prism, and pinacoid. Calcite produces many twinning varieties with blocky chevrons, right-angled prisms, heart shapes or dipyramidal shapes. In addition, this mineral forms as massive, fibrous, concretionary, stalactitic, nodular, oolitic, stellate, dendritic, granular, layered, as well as phantoms, included crystals, colour varieties, pseudomorphs and unique associations.
One classic variety of Calcite is the scalenohedron crystal, known as Dogtooth because it forms a sharp point, resembling a dog’s canine tooth. The best specimens are either colourless or an amber-orange colour.
Mexican Onyx (different to the Quartz variety) is another well-known form that is used frequently for ornamental carvings. It is distinguished easily through its fabulous colours of banded white, yellow, red and brown.
Calcite is the main mineral component in the cave formations of stalactites and stalagmites and other variants. Water, rich in Calcite goes into a dry cavern and begins the slow process of evaporation, which precipitates the Calcite.
Iceland Spar, named after the country of its discovery in Basalt cavities, is a clear, colourless Calcite. It shows the classic cleaved form, and demonstrates the double refraction characteristic of Calcite. This phenomenon occurs because of Calcite’s unique optical properties. Light rays entering the crystal are split into fast and slow beams, which exit at different angles due to their varying speeds. The result is that anything viewed through the crystal is seen as a double image, until the crystal is moved to the one direction where the light rays are both the same speed and then normal vision is resumed. Iceland Spar has been used in optical industries.
In addition, some Calcite varieties demonstrate the following characteristics
- fluorescence when light from an ultraviolet lamp reacts with the chemicals of a mineral and causes the mineral to glow
- phosphorescence when a mineral continues to glow after the light has been removed
- thermo luminescence when the mineral is heated it glows
- triboluminescence glowing when a mineral is struck or crushed
- effervescence (CO2 bubbles) when in contact with acid, even weak acids
An environmentally significant property is a reversal of the last characteristic. Many sea organisms make their shells from Calcite and they use the carbon dioxide (CO2) in seawater to do this. In turn, this allows more carbon dioxide from the air to dissolve into the sea. If this action can increase, it could help reduce the so-called greenhouse effect on the planet.

It alleviates rheumatism.
Carnelian is the yellow to red to reddish-brown variety of Chalcedony, which is a cryptocrystalline variety of Quartz, alongside Agates. There are many varieties and colours of Agate. Some of the more common of varieties are Chrysoprase (green Agate), Sard (yellow to brown Agate), Sardonyx (banded Sard), Onyx (black and white Agate), and Carnelian (a yellow to orange-red Agate). Due to Agates highly porous nature, it is often commercially dyed, this is usually obvious due to the over brightness of colour.
Agate forms hydrothermally, often in spaces formed by gaseous bubbles in cooling lava in volcanic rock, where it grows from the outside edge of the cavity towards the centre. Usually it has lovely concentric or irregular bands created by other substances being deposited on each layer and these can include other members of the large extended Quartz family. If the Agate reaches the centre of the cavity and closes up, it is often referred to as an Agate Almond, if it does not and leaves a space in the centre it is referred to as an Agate Geode.

A flame test will identify Celestite by turning the flame red due to the Strontium, whereas Barite turns the flame a pale green due to the Barium content. Celestite, or rather Strontium, is used in the production of fireworks due of its ability to burn with a bright red flame. In addition, Strontium is used in the manufacture of glass for television sets, as it is non-toxic and shields the viewer from X-rays generated by the high voltage of cathode ray tubes. However because Strontium is much less toxic than either Lead or Barium, it is now used routinely for cathode ray tubes.
Celestite is named after celestial, an allusion to the pretty, sky-blue colour of its crystals, or from the Greek caelestis, another reference to its pale blue colour. However, the crystals may be colourless, yellow or with tints of red, green and brown. Their habit includes bladed with two large pinacoid faces top and bottom and small prism faces, forming a jutting angle on every side. There are many variations of these faces but the flattened blades and tabular crystals are the most common, however crystals may be nodular, fibrous or granular also. Celestite crystals are transparent to translucent, the lustre is vitreous and the crystal system is orthorhombic. The well-formed crystals, good lustre and attractive blue colour make Celestite a must for the collector.

It is named after Parker Cleaveland, a professor of geology and mineralogy at Bowdoin College in Maine during the early 1800s. The name Feldspar is derived from the German word feld meaning field.
Albite crystallises late from molten rock and because of this, it isolates rarer elements in the final stages of crystallisation, producing rare minerals. This is why often it is found with rare and attractive minerals. The variety Cleavelandite is associated with Tourmaline. It forms thin, platy, bladed, white to transparent crystals, some with striated, parallel lines on the crystal surface or cleavage
face. Albite crystals are translucent to opaque with rarely transparent, the lustre is vitreous to dull and the crystal system is triclinic. Typically, Albite crystals have a nearly rectangular or square cross-section with slightly slanted dome and pinacoid terminations. The variety Cleavelandite forms thin platy crystals that can grow large, however the thickness is only ever a millimetres. Other habits include blocky, tabular and platy crystals, which may be twinned. The colour of Albite is usually white, but may be colourless, grey or have hints of blue, yellow, orange and brown. The word Albite is derived from the Latin albums after its common colour of white.
All the Plagioclase Feldspars show a type of twinning that is named after Albite. The Albite Twinning Law displays stacks of twin layers. These twinned layers can be seen as striation like grooves on the surface of the crystal and unlike true striations, these also appear on the cleavage surfaces. Minerals associated with Albite include Quartz, Tourmaline and Muscovite. Notable occurrences include Labrador, Canada and the Scandinavian Peninsula.

It is a common sedimentary rock-forming mineral, which may be found in massive beds several hundred feet thick. In addition, Dolomite is found in metamorphic marbles, hydrothermal veins and replacement deposits. It is named after the French mineralogist Deodat de Dolomieu.
Dolomite does not form on the surface of the earth, although massive layers of Dolomite can be found in ancient rocks. It is thought that Dolomite rock is one of the few sedimentary rocks that undergo a significant mineralogical change after it is deposited. It is initially deposited as Calcite/Aragonite; however, during a process call diagenesis the Calcite and/or Aragonite is altered to Dolomite. Although this is a similar process to metamorphism, this change does not fulfil those criteria.
Typically, Dolomite’s crystal habit is blocky rhombohedral, however some crystals are curved (like a saddle), possibly due to twinning. Other habits include coarse crystalline, prismatic and massive. Crystals are transparent to translucent, lustre is vitreous and colour ranges from true white, grey, yellow, pink or brown. The crystal system is trigonal. Dolomite is similar to Calcite and may be difficult to distinguish. However, Dolomite has Magnesium ions.

It emits a sense of peace and contentment, mixed with hope and optimism. It is helpful to those with depression, phobias and chronic dis-ease. It calms inflamed skin, aids the autonomous nervous system and harmonises the functioning between all the organs.
Feldspar is the name of a group of minerals that share similar structures and characteristics. There are nearly 20 recognised members, however only half are well known. These are split into two groups, Plagioclase Feldspars (Sodium Aluminum Silicate) and Alkali (K) Feldspars (Potassium Aluminum Silicate).
The different Feldspar members are distinguished by their structure and chemistry. The K-Feldspars (Microcline, Sanidine and Orthoclase) are polymorphs, meaning they have the same chemistry, KAlSi3 O8, but different structures. This makes them separate minerals. The Plagioclase Feldspars form a series of minerals ranging from the Sodium rich end member, Albite to the Calcium rich end member, Anorthite. The other members of the series, Oligoclase, Andesine, Labradorite and Bytownite have arbitrary boundaries based on their percentage of Sodium or Calcium. Often, Feldspars are referred to as either Plagioclase or Orthoclase due to the difficulty in distinguishing the individual members.
Feldspar crystals tend to twin easily. They may even be multiply twinned on the same plane of a single crystal, producing parallel layers of twinned crystals. Crystals tend to have a dull lustre and are often blocky.
The name Feldspar comes from the German feldt spat, meaning field stone. This is because when Feldspar weathers, it releases large amounts of plant nutrients, such as potassium, which enrich the soil.

Commonly, Fluorite crystals are cubic, or form as octahedrons. The latter is thought to form at higher temperatures than the cubic form. Rarely, it forms as a dodecahedron (12 sides) or as a tetrahexahedron (24 sides) usually due to a modification of the basic cubic shape. In addition, Fluorite may produce crusts and botryoidal forms and twinning may occur. Crystals are transparent to translucent, the lustre is vitreous and the crystal system is isometric.
Fluorite has a huge range of colours that include purple, blue, green, yellow, colourless, brown, pink, black and red-orange. There may be more than one colour on a specimen. Often, colours are arranged in bands or zones in a cubic arrangement, similar to the crystal itself. This can give a phantom effect of a crystal of one colour being inside a crystal of another colour.
Fluorite is fluorescent and these colours considerably vary through the more common blue to yellow, green, red, white and purple. In fact, the word fluorescent is derived from Fluorite. This follows a precedence set by Opal and the characteristic opalescence. In addition, some Fluorites notably the variety chlorophane are thermo-luminescent, which means they have the ability to glow when heated. Although once heated, it does not produce the colour change again, it is a one off.

Fulgurite, from the Latin fulgur, meaning lightning is the name given to rocks, which have been fused on the surface by lightning, and to the characteristic holes in rocks formed in the same way.
The most common type of Fulgurite is the Sand Fulgurite. Sand is super-heated instantly as the lightening strike courses downward into it. This causes the sand to melt and fuse. After cooling, the glass-like hollow tubes (Fulgurites) may be located beneath the surface of the sand, sometimes extending to several feet and usually decreasing in diameter as they descend to depths. Usually the outer surfaces are covered with unfused Quartz sand grains and the inner surfaces and openings of the tubes are usually smooth and glassy.
Rock Fulgurites are formed when lightning strikes the surface of a rock, melting and fusing the surface, and sometimes the interior of the rock (the melting point of Quartz is 2950oF). The colour of the glassy, fused Quartz varies from pale to smokey grey, through to shiny black.

Although Hemimorphite is one of the more common Sorosilicates it does have an unusual characteristic, that of polar or hemimorphic crystals from which it gets its name. The crystal structure is such that it produces a different type of termination at each end of the crystal, one end being blunt whilst the other pyramidal. This is not always visible if one termination joins the matrix or another crystal.
Hemimorphite has two common crystal habits. One produces very glassy, clear or white, thin, bladed crystals, often well formed showing many crystal faces whilst the other form produces a blue to blue-green botryoidal crust that resembles Smithsonite or Prehnite. Other colours include green, white, colourless, brown and yellow.
Hemimorphite was originally named Calamine, however this name had been applied to another mineral, Hemimorphite was proposed is now in general use. The name is apt because hemi means half, and morph means shape: an allusion to its dual crystal termination formation. Hemimorphite is strongly pyroelectric and piezoelectric.

Labradorite Healing Energies and Mineralogy
Labradorite helps develop intuition, mediumistic abilities and the ability to see auras. It cleanses balances and protects the aura. It stimulates the imagination and enthusiasm, and enhances patience. It encourages an optimistic outlook and promotes looking forward. Labradorite alleviates colds, rheumatic illnesses and gout and can help reduce blood pressure.
Labradorite has the chemistry Ca(50-70%) Na(50-30%) (Al, Si)AlSi2 O8, Calcium Sodium Aluminum Silicate and is a member of the mineral class Silicates, sub-class Tectosilicates and group Feldspars. Labradorite is a member of the plagioclase series of minerals, which comprises of Feldspars that range in chemical composition from pure NaAlSi3 O8 (Sodium, Aluminum, Silicon) to pure CaAl2 Si2 O8 (Calcium Aluminum, Silicon). To be defined as Labradorite it must contain 50-70% Calcium in the Sodium/Calcium position of the crystal structure.
Although Labradorite can look plain and dull, when moved, it flashes glorious colours. This manifests because of a play of light across cleavage planes and in sliced sections. This play of light is called labradorescence (after the mineral itself). This occurs because Labradorite has two distinct layers made through temperature changes in its growth. When light enters the mineral it is refracted back and forth through the deeper layers. This slows the light wave down and changes the wavelength and therefore the colour of the light ray, so that it is different from that which entered the mineral. The colours seen include vibrant blues, violets, greens, golds and oranges.
Habits include well-formed coarse-sized crystals, anhedral to subhedral granular crystals in the matrix, and striated parallel lines on the crystal surface or cleavage face. Colour is grey, colourless, white, light green, lustre is dull to vitreous and crystals are transparent to translucent. Cleavage is perfect in one and good in another direction forming nearly right-angled prisms, fracture is conchoidal and hardness is rated as 6 – 6.5. The crystal system is triclinic.
Minerals associated with Labradorite include Biotite, Pyroxene and Hornblende. Notable locations include Scandinavian Peninsula and Labrador, Canada, after which it is named.

It lowers blood pressure and regulates the functioning of the thyroid gland.
Lazulite (Lapis Lazuli) has the chemistry (Mg, Fe)Al2(PO4)2(OH)2, Magnesium Iron Aluminum Phosphate Hydroxide and belongs to the mineral class Phosphates. It is easily confused with Lazurite and Azurite, particularly when looking at colour only, however Azurite is reactive to acids, and Lazurite forms different crystals to Lazulite.
Lazulite is a rock, not a mineral, as it is a complex aggregate of other minerals. The deep blue colouring of Lazulite varies from stone to stone and is dependant on the specific proportions of the minerals it contains. These minerals are Hauynite, Sodalite, Noselite and Lazurite, which is an amorphous mixture of Hauynite and Sodalite. Calcite is always present. It usually contains golden coloured flecks of pyrites. The white flecks are usually Calcite. The deep blue colour is mainly due to the presence of Hauynite.
Lazulite is in a solid solution series (a set of two or more minerals that have some elements that substitute freely for each other) with the mineral Scorzalite. Lazulite is rich in Magnesium whilst Scorzalite is rich in Iron. The rarer Scorzalite tends to be darker, less transparent and denser than Lazulite.
The colour of Lazulite ranges from a gorgeous, dark azure-blue through to pale blue, lustre is vitreous to dull, specimens are translucent and the crystal system is monoclinic. Habits include well-shaped monoclinic dipyramidal to tabular crystals, granular and massive. Cleavage is distinct in one direction, fracture is uneven and hardness is 5.5 – 6.
Lazulite has been known since ancient times, its historical source being high in the Badakhshan mountains in north-eastern Afghanistan where it has been worked for over 6,000 years. It is opaque and slightly soft, so is rarely faceted. Its name derives from the Latin lapis, meaning stone, and the Persian lazhward, which means blue.

Marble Healing Energies and Mineralogy
Marble enhances meditation and brings total recall of dreams. It helps to activate the unused portions of the mind and provokes feelings of compassion and caring. Marble lowers fevers and increases the body’s ability to process calcium. Marble is associated with the astrological sign of Gemini.
Marble is a metamorphic rock resulting from the metamorphism of sedimentary carbonate rocks, either Limestone or Dolostone. The metamorphic process causes a complete recrystallisation of the original rock into an interlocking mosaic of Calcite and/or Dolomite crystals. The temperatures and pressures necessary to form Marble usually destroy any fossils and sedimentary textures present in the original rock.
The characteristic swirls and veins of many coloured Marble varieties are usually due to various mineral impurities such as clay, silt, sand, iron oxides, or Chert, which were originally present as grains or layers in the limestone. Green coloration is often due to Serpentine resulting from originally high Magnesium Limestone or Dolostone with Silica impurities. These various impurities have been mobilized and recrystallised by the intense pressure and heat of the metamorphism.
The word Marble derives from the Greek marmaros, meaning shining stone. It is extensively used for sculpture, as a building material, and in many other applications.

Meteorites Healing Energies and Mineralogy
Meteorites aid communication with distant world, whist retaining a connection with the earth. They enhance meditation and feelings of tranquillity.
A meteor is a bright streak of light in the sky that is produced as matter in the solar system falls into Earth's atmosphere. This temporary incandescence is a result of atmospheric friction, which typically occurs at heights of 80-110 kilometres (50-68 miles) above Earth's surface.
A meteoroid is matter revolving around the sun or any object in interplanetary space that is too small to be called an asteroid or a comet (even smaller particles are called micrometeoroids or cosmic dust grains). A meteorite is a meteoroid that reaches the surface of the Earth without being completely vaporised.
The average meteoroid enters the earth’s atmosphere at between 10 and 70 km/sec! However, all but the very largest decelerate rapidly to a few hundred km/hour due to atmospheric friction and hit the earth with very little impact. Meteorites weighing hundreds of tons are the ones that form craters.
The name meteor is derived form the Greek meteoron, meaning phenomenon in the sky.

It also has two pairs of gills rather than one pair, and has up to 90 tentacles arranged in two rings around the mouth. It has a smooth, coiled shell, up to 28 cm (11 in) in diameter.
The shell is lined with mother-of-pearl and is separated into a series of progressively larger compartments, the most recently formed of which is inhabited by the animal. The chambers are filled with gas and liquid. The walls (septa) dividing the chambers are pierced by a thin strand of mantle tissue (siphuncle) connected to the nautilus. Gas and liquid exchange occurs through the siphuncle, and the nautilus can adjust the content of each chamber thus regulating its buoyancy. Little is known about the behaviour and life cycle of the nautilus, other than during the day it rests on the bottom of the ocean at depths ranging to 600 m (2,000 ft). At night, it swims about by forcing water through a primitive funnel; it eats diatoms,
shrimps, fish, and algae. When the animal is feeding, its tentacles are extended to catch whatever swims into them; the tentacles are small, contractile, and adhesive but have no suckers.

Opal has the chemistry SiO2 - nH2O; Hydrated Silicon Dioxide, although it is primarily SiO2 with varying amounts of water from 5-10% plus. It is a member of the mineral class Mineraloids because its structure is not truly crystalline. However, it does possess a structure that consists of random chains of silicon and oxygen packed into miniscule spheres. Often, these spheres are irregular in size and inconsistent in concentration, although in precious Opal, they are organized more into pockets of approximately equal size and regular concentration. These pockets have the effect of diffracting light at various wavelengths, creating the beautiful colours for which Opal is known. Each pocket produces a different colour, with a different intensity depending on the angle from which a viewer sees it. The common Opal lacks this opalescence.
The colours of Opal can range through white, colourless, pale yellow, pale red, grey or black when impurities are common. The diffraction seen in precious Opal can cause flashes of any colour of the rainbow. Specimens are transparent to translucent and lustre is vitreous to pearly. A crystal system does not apply because Opal is amorphous.
Habits include massive, cavity-fillings such as in fractures and geodes, nodular, reniform or as a replacement of other
minerals and wood. A crystal system does not apply because Opal is amorphous. Cleavage is absent, fracture is conchoidal and hardness is 5.5 – 6.
Opal has been mined for centuries, at least since Roman times when they extracted the Opal from areas now within the Czech Republic. The Aztecs made use of local Mexican sources, as did the Spaniards when they exported the material back to Europe. Today most precious Opal comes from Australia with significant sources from Mexico and the Western United States. The name Opal probably is derived from the Sanskrit name for precious stone, upala or from the Latin word opalus, which means seeing jewel.
Minerals associated with Opal include Chert (a form of microcrystalline Quartz) and volcanic rocks. Notable locations include Western USA, Mexico, Australia, England and the Czech Republic.
Orthoceras Healing Energies and Mineralogy
Orthoceras facilitates connections to the young Earth and past lives in ancient civilizations. It brings stability, organization, and harmony to the home and enhances businesses whatever there size.
Orthoceras (pl Orthocerids) is an ancestor of the squid and octopus. It is a primitive member of the Phylum Cephalopods and is the most common of the straight Palaeozoic Cephalopods. The word Orthoceras means straight horn, and if you look at one you can see why they were given that name. They are cone shaped, consist of a central siphuncle filled with calcareous deposits, and have transverse ribs. Their age is Lower Ordovician through Upper Triassic, which means that they are approximately 400 million years old! Orthoceras is the name for European species, many of which are found in Morocco; those found in North America are called Michelinoceris.
Orthoclase Mineralogy
Orthoclase has the chemistry KAlSi3O8, Potassium Aluminum Silicate and belongs to the mineral class Silicates, subclass Tectosilicates, Feldspar Group. Orthoclase is named after the Greek orthos and kalo meaning right and I cleave, an allusion to Orthoclase’s good cleavage in two directions, which form almost right angled prisms.
Feldspar has two main groups, Plagioclase Feldspars (Sodium Aluminum Silicate) and Alkali (K) Feldspars (Potassium Aluminum Silicate). Orthoclase belongs to the latter group and is a polymorph (sharing the same chemistry but having a different structure) as the other members, Microcline, Sanidine and Anorthoclase. Orthoclase is the main K-Feldspar of granites and syenites, which cooled moderately quickly, whereas Sanidine and Anorthoclase are common constituents in extrusive igneous rocks (e.g. Rhyolites), where the rock cooled more quickly. Notable locations include Austria, England, ant the USA, however there are many more.
Crystal habits of Orthoclase include blocky or tabular crystals, which are near rectangular or square with slightly slanted dome and pinacoid terminations and twinning is common. Crystals are usually opaque, may be translucent or rarely transparent, lustre is vitreous and the colour is white, clear, yellowy, pink, greenish or shades of red, orange or brown. The crystal system is monoclinic. Some crystals show opalescence and are then referred to as Moonstone.

Quartz has the chemical formula SiO2 Silicon Dioxide, is a member of the mineral class Silicates, subclass Tectosilicates, Quartz group. It is the most common mineral on the Earth’s surface, being found in nearly every geological environment and is at least a component of almost every rock type. In addition, Quartz is the most varied in terms of varieties, colours and forms because of the abundance and widespread distribution of Quartz. This is due to the unique structure of Quartz, which involves corkscrew (helix) chains of silicon tetrahedrons that take four tetrahedrons in order for repetition (three turns). Each tetrahedron is essentially rotated 120 degrees. Quartz can produce both left and right-handed crystals depending on the direction of the rotating helix.
The larger crystals of Quartz are glassy to vitreous and transparent to translucent, however cryptocrystalline forms are usually waxy to dull, occasionally vitreous and can translucent or opaque. Quartz is piezoelectric which means that when a crystal is heated, compressed or vibrated a different electrical charge will form at opposite ends of the crystal, an electrical potential. Conversely, if an electrical potential is applied to the crystal, it will vibrate.
As you would expect crystal habits are extremely variable. The most common habit, and most familiar perhaps, is the hexagonal prisms terminated with a six-sided pyramid, in actually two rhombohedrons. This is the generator crystal formation. Crystal lined rock with just the pyramids showing, known as druse, is common, also. There are a multitude of possible massive habits including botryoidal, globular, stalactitic and crusts of agate as seen in vugs. Crystals frequently twin; a famous twinning habit is the Japanese twin, where two crystals contact at a 90º angle. Quartz crystals may also contain certain unusual growths. One is a sceptre, where the top of a crystal bulges out from the rest of the crystal, and another is a phantom, where one crystal forms over another, leaving a ghosted form inside.
Quartz can be almost any colour, with Clear quartz being the most common, followed by Milky Quartz. The purple variety is known as Amethyst, pink as Rose Quartz, black-brown as Smokey Quartz and yellow-orange as Citrine. There are more variety names given to Quartz than any other mineral.
There are numerous minerals associated with Quartz including Amazonite, Tourmalines especially Elbaite, Pyrite, Rutile, Zeolites, Fluorite, Calcite, Gold, Muscovite, Topaz, Beryl, Hematite and Spodumene. Hematite forms an incrustation pseudomorph over Quartz crystals, which causes a crystal to become opaque and reddish brown, and occasionally gives the crystal a multicoloured, iridescent effect.
Quartz is an important mineral with numerous uses. Sand, which is composed of tiny Quartz pebbles, is the primary ingredient for the manufacture of glass. Clear Quartz has many electronic uses; it is used as oscillators in radios, watches, and pressure gauges. Quartz is also used as an abrasive for sandblasting, grinding glass, and cutting soft stones.
Clear Quartz is used in the study of optics. Quartz is essential in the computer industry as the silicon semiconductors are made from it. Quartz is important in the production of soaps and ceramics.

It encourages the transformation of ideas into action by amplifying energy, mastery and success. Calcite stimulates the metabolism and benefits the immune system and the heart. It enhances growth in children. It alleviates skin and intestinal conditions and encourages healing of tissue and bone. In addition, Septarian promotes assertiveness linked with a flexible attitude. It aids decision-making by providing insight and the acceptance of differing solutions.
Septarians were formed approximately 110million years ago, when the Gulf of Mexico reached what is now southern Utah. Decomposing sea (shell) life, killed by volcanic actions had a chemical attraction for the sediment around them, forming mud balls. Tide and wave action rolled the balls around, increasing the size of many of them. As the ocean retreated, the balls were left to dry and crack. Because of their Benonite content they also shrank, trapping the cracks inside. Then they were covered with sediment. The ocean returned depositing shell life above the balls. As this decomposed Calcite from the shells was carried down into the cracks, Calcite crystals were formed. A thin wall of Calcite was transformed into Aragonite, dividing the clay exteriors from the centres. They fluoresce under black or ultra-violet lamps.

It breathes life into new endeavours and increases motivation and determination.
It helps the recovery from chronic illness, and encourages cellular regeneration. It is beneficial to the circulatory system, lungs, blood flow, and particularly the pineal gland.
Stromatolites are named from the Greek words strōma meaning mattress, bed or stratum and lithos meaning rock. They were built by living microorganisms, especially cyannobacteria, (primitive organisms lacking a cellular nucleus know as prokaryotes) that thrived in warm aquatic environments and built reefs, similar to today’s coral. Cyannobacteria were the dominant life form on Earth for over 2 billion years and it is thought that their photosynthetic activity began to produce and supply oxygen into the atmosphere 3,500 to 2,500 million years ago! They released mucus from their cell and caught fine granules of minerals suspended in seawater. The granules with calcium carbonate dissolved in seawater and produced a thin layer of sediment or calcium carbonate deposition, resulting in the Stromatalite formation.
Fossil Stromatolites constitute the earliest record of life on Earth and can be traced back 3.5 billion years to the early Archean eon. Although now nearly extinct, Stromatolites are still forming today in a few places, including Antarctica, Australia and England.

This structure contains rings of Alumino-Silicate tetrahedrons oriented in one direction and this is what produces Stilbite’s prominent pinacoid faces with their unique lustre and its perfect cleavage.
Stilbite commonly forms crystals inside the petrified bubbles (vesicles) of volcanic rocks that have undergone some metamorphism. Occasionally Stilbite may display a rare formation of crystals that aggregate together to form a structure resembling a wheatsheaf with several crystals stacked parallel to each other and fanning out at the top and bottom whilst the middle remains thin. Sometimes cruciform twinning occurs. Typically, its crystals have a pearly lustre and a hint of pink.
Other minerals associated with Stilbite are Apophyllite, Babingtonite, Calcite, Heulandite, Natrolite, Quartz and other Zeolites. Stilbite occurs in several locations including India, Scotland, Iceland, and Canada.

Talc Healing Energies and Mineralogy
Talc eases skin inflammation of all kinds, reduces diahorrhea and stomach cramps (Do Not Ingest)
Talc (aka Soapstone) is a soft Magnesium Silicate Hydroxide mineral and is a heat, acid and electrically-resistant stone. It is widespread, often occurring in limestone formations, eroded clays, and in metamorphosed schist and gneiss strata where it forms either thick veins or as a mass of stone. Although it is sometimes mistaken for Dolomite, Talc is easily distinguished from other rocks by its soapy or greasy feeling when rubbed and by its softness; it has a hardness of 1 on the Mohs scale.
Talc is a secondary mineral formed by mineralisation that occurs deep beneath the earth's crust. It is generally found in metamorphic rocks where water charged with carbon dioxide has decomposed overlying minerals rich in Magnesium, Silicate, and Calcium. Trapped in open eroded pockets of rock formations located thousands of feet beneath the ground, this mineral-rich sludge undergoes a dramatic change in to the mineral Talc, facilitated by the intense pressure and a range of extreme temperatures generated by the magma core below.
Usually, Talc forms foliated, radiating scales resembling rosettes as well as compact masses. Its colours range through white, brown, green, or blue tints. It can be splintered into large thin sheets with a pearly lustre. When held against a bright light, the sheet is either transparent or translucent with a milky background.
Talc has many uses including counter tops, electrical switchboards, carvings, as an ingredient in paints, rubber, roofing materials, ceramics and insecticides, and of course in talcum powder.

Torbernite can lose water and convert to a different mineral called Meta-Torbernite, mineral group Meta-Autunite/Meta-Torbernite. The change to Meta-Torbernite will often produce a pseudomorph i.e. an atom by atom replacement of one minerals chemistry to form another mineral, which leaves the crystal shape of the lost mineral intact. Torbernites conversion is less dramatic, involving the lose of a few water molecules only. However, the conversion is irreversible and ongoing, therefore collection specimens of a certain age are almost certainly partially to totally converted. Fine Torbernite specimens should be stored in a closed container to avoid water loss.
