| ![Aventurine Mineralogy]() | Aventurine is a form of Quartz, and is characterised by its translucency and the presence of platy mineral occlusions, often Mica, that give a shimmering effect, known as aventurescence. The most common colour of Aventurine is green, but it may also be orange, brown, yellow, blue or grey. A silvery-green or blue sheen is produced by Chrome-bearing Fuchsite (a variety of Muscovite Mica), whereas the orange and brownish colours are produced by Hematite or Goethite. The name Aventurine derives from the Italian a ventura meaning by chance, in an allusion to the chance discovery of Aventurine glass, known as Goldstone at some point in the 18th century. Goldstone is easily distinguished visually from Aventurine due to its coarse platelets of copper, dispersed within the glass in a regular manner. |
