Gaudefroyite has the chemical formula Ca4Mn3+2-3(BO3)3(CO3)(O,OH)3 Calcium, Magnesium, Boron, Hydrogen, Carbon Oxygen. It is an uncommon hydrothermal mineral in manganese deposits. It is named after Abbe Christophe Gaudefroy (1888-1971), a French mineralogist who worked in Morocco.
Gaudefroyite crystals are prismatic, black, adamantine and sub-opaque. Fracture is brittle with conchoidal fragments and there is no cleavage. Hardness is rated at six.
Well known locations include Tachguagalt Mine, Tachguagalt, Ouarzazate Province, Souss-Massa-Draâ Region, Morocco and N'Chwaning Mine, Kalahari Manganese Field, Northern Cape Province, South Africa.

Goethite has the chemistry FeO(OH), Hydrated Iron Oxide and is a member of the mineral class Oxides and Hydroxides, Goethite group. It is named after the German poet J. W. Goethe (1749 - 1832) who collected minerals.
Goethite crystal habits include acicular with needle-like crystals, platy, radial, reniform, botryoidal and massive. Crystals are sub-translucent to opaque, lustre is earthy to dull for massive forms and metallic for crystals. The colour varies through brown, red-brown, yellow-brown, near black and ochre yellow. The crystal system is orthorhombic, cleavage is perfect in one direction and fracture is uneven to splintery. Hardness is 5-5.5 and specific gravity is light at an average of 4.0. Streak is brown to yellow.
