 | Jarosite highlights the shadow side of our being and facilitates acknowledging and assimilating this into our whole being. It is helpful to those with bipolar disorder, and where behaviour or thought is extreme and unhelpful.
Photo shows Jarosite with Quartz.
The uncommon Jarosite has the chemistry KFe3(SO4)2(OH)6, Potassium Iron Sulphate Hydroxide and belongs to mineral class Sulphates, Alunite group. It has the same crystal structure but different chemistry (isostructural) to Natrojarosite. Jarosite contains potassium in place of Natrojarosite's sodium and without a chemical test, it is difficult to distinguish the two minerals. To complicate matters further both minerals are isostructural with Alunite KAl3(SO4)2(OH)6, who lends its name to the mineral group to which all three belong. Jarosite crystals are small and scarce. When they do form, they are tabular to flattened rhombohedral looking crystals, which are actually a combination of two trigonal pyramids. It is more likely to form as earthy masses, crusts, botryoidal or granular in amber-yellow to brown. It is associated with Barite, Turquoise, Galena, Goethite, Limonite, Hematite and other iron minerals. Jarosite takes its name from Barranco Jaroso, southern Spain, where it was found. |

Jasper is a cryptocrystalline variety of the mineral Quartz, which is the most abundant single mineral on earth, making up about 12% of the earth's crust and occurring in a wide variety of igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. Quartz varieties may be separated into two main groups that are based on the size of their individual grains or crystals. Cryptocrystalline Quartz has individual crystals that are too small to be easily distinguishable under a normal microscope and macro-crystalline Quartz has individual crystals that are distinguishable with the naked eye e.g. Amethyst, Clear Quartz and Rose Quartz. Cryptocrystalline Quartz may be further divided into two main groups, fibrous and micro-granular. Fibrous cryptocrystalline varieties are commonly referred to as Chalcedony and include Agate, Carnelian and Chrysoprase. Micro-granular cryptocrystalline varieties of Quartz are commonly referred to as Chert, and include Flint and Jasper. Jasper has the chemistry SiO2 (Quartz) and belongs to the mineral class Tectosilicate. The crystal system is hexagonal; specific gravity is 2.58-2.91 and hardness 6.5 to 7. Jasper's lustre is described as dull vitreous to greasy and its transparency as translucent to opaque. It shows no cleavage and its fracture is conchoidal. The streak is white. Jasper is formed by the replacement of calcareous rock by silica-rich solutions and by direct marine precipitation of silica gel or organic silica. Jasper is typically red in differing shades or brown due to Hematite or Goethite impurities, however it can have almost any colour as well as being cloudy, variegated, roughly banded or spotted. Due to these variations, Jasper has many names that it is known by based on such things as colour and patterns, localities e.g. Red Jasper, Picture Jasper. Picasso Jasper resembles the abstract, modernistic look of a Picasso print with its variety of stripes, dots and patches of black, grey and occasionally red colours. |
