Talc (aka Soapstone) is a soft Magnesium Silicate Hydroxide mineral and is a heat, acid and electrically-resistant stone. It is widespread, often occurring in limestone formations, eroded clays, and in metamorphosed schist and gneiss strata where it forms either thick veins or as a mass of stone. Although it is sometimes mistaken for Dolomite, Talc is easily distinguished from other rocks by its soapy or greasy feeling when rubbed and by its softness; it has a hardness of 1 on the Mohs scale. Talc is a secondary mineral formed by mineralisation that occurs deep beneath the earth's crust. It is generally found in metamorphic rocks where water charged with carbon dioxide has decomposed overlying minerals rich in Magnesium, Silicate, and Calcium. Trapped in open eroded pockets of rock formations located thousands of feet beneath the ground, this mineral-rich sludge undergoes a dramatic change in to the mineral Talc, facilitated by the intense pressure and a range of extreme temperatures generated by the magma core below. Usually, Talc forms foliated, radiating scales resembling rosettes as well as compact masses. Its colours range through white, brown, green, or blue tints. It can be splintered into large thin sheets with a pearly lustre. When held against a bright light, the sheet is either transparent or translucent with a milky background. Talc has many uses including counter tops, electrical switchboards, carvings, as an ingredient in paints, rubber, roofing materials, ceramics and insecticides, and of course in talcum powder. |

There are two forms of Tektites. The more common form referred to as splash-form Tektites have aerodynamic shapes such as spheres, tear-drops, dumbbells, and disks. The other variety is referred to as layered Tektites, are found in abundance only in southeast Asia. They have fragmented shapes and commonly display layering and variations in bubble content. They contain more water, and were heated to lower temperatures than the splash-form Tektites. The colour of Tektites ranges from colourless, green, yellowish green, brown, grey and black. The pieces are transparent to sub-translucent and the lustre is vitreous on fracture surfaces. The outer surfaces of Tektites may be smooth, grooved, etched or rough with some having bubbles that are commonly arranged in swirls. |
