Barite Mineralogy

Barite (Baryte) has the chemistry BaSO4, Barium Sulphate and is in the mineral class Sulphates, Barite group. This common mineral is found in veins in ore deposits of Lead, Copper, Zinc, Silver Iron and Nickel and in addition, in veins and nodules in Limestones. Barite is named after the Greek baryos, meaning heavy.
Typically, the crystals of Barite are bladed or tabular and occasionally prismatic. Other habits include massive, fibrous, lamellar, granular and stalamatic. The colour varies; however colourless and white are the most common with blue, green, yellow and red occurring more rarely. Crystals are transparent to translucent, the lustre is vitreous and the system orthorhombic. Sometimes Barite bladed or tabular crystals grow in rosette clusters, which are known as Desert Roses, not to be confused with the Gypsum variety of the same name. Barite may be confused with Celestite (SrSO4) as they both have the same structure and form very similar crystals. A flame test will distinguish them, a green flame indicating Barite due to its Barium content, and a red one indicating Celestite due to its Strontium content.
Many minerals are associated with Barite and these include Chalcopyrite, Calcite, Aragonite, Sulphur, Pyrite, Quartz, Vanadinite, Cerussite and Fluorite. Favourable locations include USA, England and Germany.

Benitoite Healing Energies and Mineralogy

Benitoite has the chemistry BaTiSi3O9, Barium Titanium Silicate and is a member of the mineral class Silicates, subclass Cyclosilicates. When Benitoite was discovered last century, it was initially thought to be a variety of Sapphire, due to its blue colouring. Further investigations showed that it was in fact, a new mineral. Minerals associated with Benitoite include the rare black-red Neptunite and white Natrolite. The unique combination of these three minerals occurs in one location only, namely San Benito, California.
Crystal habits of Benitoite include flattened, six-faced dipyramids with a distinct triangle shape and as small grains. Typically, crystals are blue; however, they may be colourless to yellowish also. They are transparent to translucent, the lustre is vitreous and the crystal system is hexagonal. Cleavage is absent, fracture is irregular and hardness is in the 6.0 - 6.5 range. Benitoite is a fluorescent mineral and shows a beautiful pale blue colour under UV light.
Associated minerals of Benitoite include Serpentine, Sanbornite, Taramellite, Joaquinite, Albite and Fresnoite, in addition to those minerals previously mentioned. San Benito County, California, USA remains the most notable location.

Beryl Mineralogy

Beryl has the chemistry Be3Al2(SiO3)6, Beryllium Aluminum Silicate and is a member of the mineral class Silicates, subclass Cyclosilicates. Beryl is named from the Greek beryllos meaning precious blue-green colour of the sea. Beryl itself is colourless, however various impurities give rise to many colourful varieties. These include Aquamarine (blue-green) Emerald (green), Goshenite (colourless), Morganite (pink) and Heliodor (yellow). The name Beryl is reserved for use with the red and golden varieties, i.e. Red Beryl, Golden Beryl.
Beryl crystals are transparent to translucent, lustre is vitreous and the crystal system is hexagonal. Typically, Beryl crystal habits include prismatic, columnar and coarse crystalline. Crystal faces, particularly on larger crystals may be striated lengthwise and rough.
Minerals associated with Beryl include Micas, Quartz, Euclase, Calcite, Tourmalines and some Feldspars. Notable locations include Columbia, Brazil, Russia, Pakistan and South Africa.

Biotite (Mica) Healing Energies and Mineralogy

Biotite has the chemistry K (FE, Mg)3 AlSi3 O10 (F, OH)2, Iron Magnesium Aluminum Silicate Hydroxide Fluoride. It is in the mineral class of Silicates, subclass Phyllosilicates and group of Micas. It is a common rock-forming mineral that is found in igneous, metamorphic rocks and is often associated with other minerals.
Biotite is commonly a black to brown colour, which makes it difficult to distinguish from dark brown Phlogopite. Both are end members in a series that is dependent on the percentage of iron present. Phlogopite is iron poor and Biotite is iron rich, thus producing a darker colour. Like all Micas, Biotite has a layered structure of Aluminium Silicate sheets weakly bonded together by layers of potassium ions, which produce the perfect cleavage of Muscovite. The cleavage sheets of Muscovite are durable and have high heat and electrical insulating properties. They are used to make many electrical components.
Biotite's crystal habits include tabular to prismatic crystals with prominent pinacoid terminations and as lamellar or granular rock forming masses. The four prism faces and two pinacoid faces form pseudo-hexagonal crystal formations known as books. Crystals are transparent to translucent, lustre is vitreous to pearly, hardness is a soft 2.5 and the crystal system is monoclinic.
Minerals associated with Biotite include Quartz, Feldspars, Apatite, Calcite, Hornblende, Garnets and Schorl. Notable locations include Ontario, Sicily, Russia and many other regions worldwide.

Bixbyite has the chemical formula (Mn, Fe)2O3, Manganese Iron Oxide and is a member of the mineral class Oxides and Hydroxides. It forms in pneumatolytic, hydrothermal, and metamorphic rocks. Bixbyite is named after M. Bixby, an American mineralogist. Bixbyite's crystal habits include cubes, often with octahedral and dodecahedral faces modifying the corners, massive and granular. Crystals are opaque, lustre is metallic and the colour is black. The crystal system is isometric.
Notable locations include Mexico, Argentina, Spain, India, Sweden and South Africa. Associated minerals include pink and clear Topaz, pink Beryl, Spessartine, Quartz, Hematite and Hausmannite.

Bloodstone Healing Energies

Bloodstone offers protection by fending off unwanted or unhelpful influences. It promotes dreaming, and facilitates adjustment to the unexpected. It can have a calming, grounding affect; however it does increase blood flow to the part that it is placed near. Bloodstone boosts the immune system during acute infections (place on thymus) and reduces the formation of pus. Bornite has the chemistry Cu5FeS4, Copper Iron Sulphide and belongs to the mineral class Sulphides. It is an important copper ore mineral. When the Bornite is exposed to air, it forms an iridescent tarnish, which gives rise to its common commercial name of Peacock Ore. The tarnish is made of assorted Copper oxides or hydroxides that form a single atom layer over the Bornite. As light waves bounce between the tarnish and the surface of the Bornite they split and leave with wavelengths of various colours.
Typically, Bornite is brown to black with purplish-bluish, greens and yellows tarnish and a reddish bronze colour on freshly broken surfaces. Good crystals are rare because Bornite typically it forms as massive. However, when found, Bornite crystals are usually distorted cubes with curved faces or the scarcer distorted octahedrons and dodecahedrons. Crystals are opaque with a metallic lustre and the crystal system is isometric.
