Calcite Mineralogy Calcite is named from the Greek chalix meaning Lime and has the chemistry: CaCO3 Calcium Carbonate. It belongs to the mineral class Carbonates, Calcite group. Calcite is one of the most common minerals on earth and is approximately 4% by weight of the Earth's crust. It forms in a variety of geological environments and in all three of the major rock classification types: Sedimentary as oolitic, fossiliferous and massive limestones, Metamorphic changing from Limestone to Marble through heat and pressure and Igneous as Carbonatite. In some cases, Calcite may be as much as 99% of the component minerals! Calcite has an amazing diversity of habit, as well as colour that may be white, colourless, yellow, orange, blue, pink, red, brown, green, black or grey.
Calcite is one of three Calcium Carbonate minerals, the other two being polymorphs (having the same chemistry but different crystal structures and symmetries) with Calcite. The common mineral Aragonite is orthorhombic, the very rare Vaterite is hexagonal and Calcite is trigonal. Calcite has numerous associated minerals that include Fluorite, Quartz, Barite, Sphalerite, Galena, Celestite, Sulphur, Gold, Copper, Emerald, Apatite, Biotite, Zeolites.
There are more than 300 crystal forms identified in Calcite and these forms can combine to produce thousands of different crystal variations, which are always trigonal or pseudo-hexagonal. The most common Calcite crystals are the scalenohedron, rhombohedron, hexagonal prism, and pinacoid. Calcite produces many twinning varieties with blocky chevrons, right-angled prisms, heart shapes or dipyramidal shapes. In addition, this mineral forms as massive, fibrous, concretionary, stalactitic, nodular, oolitic, stellate, dendritic, granular, layered, as well as phantoms, included crystals, colour varieties, pseudomorphs and unique associations.
One classic variety of Calcite is the scalenohedron crystal, known as Dogtooth because it forms a sharp point, resembling a dog's canine tooth. The best specimens are either colourless or an amber-orange colour.
Mexican Onyx (different to the Quartz variety) is another well-known form that is used frequently for ornamental carvings. It is distinguished easily through its fabulous colours of banded white, yellow, red and brown.
Iceland Spar, named after the country of its discovery in Basalt cavities, is a clear, colourless Calcite. It shows the classic cleaved form, and demonstrates the double refraction characteristic of Calcite. This phenomenon occurs because of Calcite's unique optical properties. Light rays entering the crystal are split into fast and slow beams, which exit at different angles due to their varying speeds. The result is that anything viewed through the crystal is seen as a double image, until the crystal is moved to the one direction where the light rays are both the same speed and then normal vision is resumed. Iceland Spar has been used in optical industries.
In addition, some Calcite varieties demonstrate the following characteristics
- fluorescence when light from an ultraviolet lamp reacts with the chemicals of a mineral and causes the mineral to glow
- hosphorescence when a mineral continues to glow after the light has been removed
- thermo luminescence when the mineral is heated it glows
- triboluminescence glowing when a mineral is struck or crushed
- effervescence (CO2 bubbles) when in contact with acid, even weak acids
