Kunzite has the chemistry LiAlSi2 O6, Lithium Aluminium Silicate and belongs to the Silicates mineral class, subclass Inosilicates and Pyroxenes group. Kunzite is the pink variety of Spodumene (The green variety is named Hiddenite). Spodumene is a rock forming mineral found in granites and pegmatites that have other Lithium minerals. Crystal habits include prismatic crystals that are usually flattened and elongated, often with pitted and rough faces.

The pink colour of Kunzite ranges through various shades, which are deeper along the crystal axis, cleavage is perfect in two directions, hardness is 6.5 - 7 and the crystal system is monoclinic. Kunzite is pleochroic, meaning there is a change in the colour intensity when a crystal is viewed from the top or bottom against being viewed from other directions.

This mineral is named after George Kunz, a gemmologist, gem buyer for Tiffany & Co and the author of The Curious Lore of Precious Stones.

Kutnahorite has the chemistry Ca(Mn,Mg,Fe)(CO3)2 Calcium Magnesium Carbonate. This rare mineral belongs to the mineral class Carbonates and Dolomite group. It is difficult to distinguish from Dolomite, except for the increased density in Kutnohorite.
Often, Kutnohorite is massive or granular with a white, pale yellow or pale pink colouring. The lustre varies, ranging from pearly to vitreous to dull. The crystals are translucent and the system is Trigonal - Rhombohedral. It is a soft mineral, being 3.5 - 4 Other minerals associated with Kutnohorite are Rhodocrosite and Calcite. Kutnohorite is named after Kutna Hora in the Czech Republic, the place of its discovery in 1901.
